It’s a new year with loads of new possibilities! One of my resolutions is to drink in every moment with more vigor, how about you? So many small, yet wonderful things, escape our notice if we don’t decide to revel in them.
For instance, call me crazy, but I am amazed at how much variety we have at grocery stores in this country. Honestly, how many pastas can one person choose from? Reveling in the choices makes grocery shopping less of a chore and more like a fun scavenger hunt. (Can you tell I was cooking for four boys and all their friends this holiday season?!)
The economy may be tough and many are struggling, but appreciating the small privileges we all have puts everything into perspective. I hope 2009 will be your most satisfying year yet, and don’t forget to revel.
10.3 million Americans are now unemployed according to a new report from the U.S. Department of Labor [bls.gov]. I was laid off myself about seven years ago and still remember the myriad of emotions that came with the unexpected turn of events.
Whether you are among the newly unemployed or just need a dose of new hope for your current place in life, here are a few tips on making it through. I’m calling it my “Super Savvy Survival Kit” and these ideas can help anyone feeling fearful, intimidated, or hopeless, find new vigor for making their next move.
Don’t Panic!
Panic is paralyzing so stay calm in order to think clearly and plan strategically. You WILL get through this time. Remember, literally thousands have been in your boat and made it through to an even better place than they had before. You can too.
Map a New Path.
If you haven’t already, write your personal purpose statement as a compass for living your dreams. Putting your purpose in writing has a powerful effect and is so energizing. (Chapter 1 of my book has an easy format to follow for this exercise.)
Call for Help.
Now is the time to boldly leverage your personal network of friends and family. You may feel a bit awkward but don’t be afraid to tell anyone and everyone exactly what you want and need. (I recently found my publicist via her note on Facebook saying she was laid off and needed a job!)
Broaden Your Brand.
This is a perfect time to extend your reach and be open to new possibilities. Take a few risks and see what’s out there. You’ll feel some fear in the process, but go for it! Great brands we all know and love (i.e. Starbucks) move into new markets constantly (Starbucks Music), why not you?
Find Joy While You Wait.
What if you knew exactly how long until your desired answer will come? Maybe then you could make the most of every moment you had before things change. Do it anyway! Enjoy today like it might all change tomorrow (hmm, sounds like that reveling thing again!)
It’s no fun to be unexpectedly thrown into the current market or to confront frustration in any area of life. But armed with the right tools, this is your perfect chance to not only find something new, but rediscover yourself and your purpose in the process.
I’m cheering you on…..
